Red Clay Consolidated School District has confirmed that the two boys struck by a car near Prices Corner on Monday afternoon, one fatally were students in the district.

"The entire Red Clay Consolidated School District community is heartbroken by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones and staff during this difficult time," the district said in a statement.

The students were hit by a car that swerved across the double-yellow line on Faulkland Road near Centreville Road, hitting the children on the sidewalk and then crashing into a home, according to New Castle County police.

Both boys were taken to Nemours Children's Hospital, where the 10-year-old later died. The 12-year-old was treated and released.

The 17-year-old driver was also injured in the crash, according to police, but was later released from the hospital.

While police investigations are ongoing, Red Clay Consolidated School District said the safety and well being of students is its "top priority." The district's crisis response team is available to anyone in need, and students and families in need of support are encouraged to reach out to the school for assistance.
